Editorial – Transparency | L’Economiste

Averitable revolution is underway in the electronic payment sector. The complaint lodged with the Competition Council in 2023 by financial payment operator NAPS against operator CMI for abuse of dominant position has had a snowball effect. It will lead to a historic decision and a redistribution of the cards.

And the end of the quasi-monopoly of an operator with a market share of over 97%. However, the end does not mean disappearance, but rather redeployment, as the CMI will continue to operate as a technical platform providing its services to all payment institutions. And it will do so under “fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory pricing and non-pricing conditions”.

A new era began a few days ago, with the arrival of five payment institutions, subsidiaries of CMI shareholder banks.

Morocco has seen many “new eras” since the foundations of competition were laid with the draft regulations. The first version dates back to the early 80s, when the structural adjustment program was launched.

It took country more than 30 years to transform the landscape of consumption and habits in society, without damaging the production and distribution of goods and services.

Today, the challenge of competition is vital. Particularly in an environment that forces us to operate differently, with the ethics and morals without which the economic field becomes destructive. Admittedly, “predatory” behavior is sometimes seen as a means of action in a competitive context. But not everyone is a predator.

In any case, the market is now played out around one word: transparency.
