Africa Cup of Nations: 5G connectivity shared equally between phone carriers

For the first time in History, Morocco will host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) (From December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026) with 5G. This fifth-generation technology will be implemented in all the selected stadiums (Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Tangiers, Marrakech, Agadir …) to allow players, fans, technical staff, organizers, media, and others to send videos, stream content, podcasts, and TV broadcasts in near real-time. According to our sources, the three phone carriers (IAM, Orange, and Inwi) will each cover at least two stadiums with their telecom solutions. In total, all stadiums will be fully equipped with the latest telecom technology «to ensure the best AFCON ever», a telecom group executive told L’Economiste. According to the CEO of Orange Morocco, «The Kingdom is transforming. It is developing at an incredible pace!» “We are all running… to meet this challenge. “Today, there is a development ecosystem in Morocco which means that everyone must get on board the same train. This involves the economic environment, digital technology, startups, telecoms… ,” added Hendrik Kasteel, CEO of Orange Morocco.
“We, phone carriers, are all confident that the investments that have been put in place (editor’s note: recently with 5G) will accelerate the development that Morocco deserves with the major deadlines so much that in the end it will be profitable for everyone” , insisted Kasteel.
For the specific case of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the three teelcom operators decided to pool their telecom infrastructure (fiber optics, mobile infrastructure, network, etc.) to optimize and maximize the benefits. «We ensured that each carrier covers two stadiums. We made sure to work hand in hand to implement the best technology. This is partly why it will be the best Africa Cup of Nations ever organized on the continent», said the head of Orange Morocco.
“In Morocco, we want to stimulate the use of digital infrastructure. And the best way to do this is through pooling resources between operators. Ultimately, together we will work better and more intelligently”, argued Hendrik Kasteel.
It should be noted that AFCON will be attended by supporters of the respective teams, as well as diaspora fans in Europe and elsewhere in the world from all the countries competing (Senegal, Algeria, Mali, Egypt, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Congo, Benin, Cameroon, Gabon, Algeria, Tunisia, etc.), in addition to special correspondents and media from around the world, technical staff, families, and more. It will therefore be a great celebration of soccer that promises to be watched around the world.o
