Editorial – Fake news

They spread through the internet as fast as the most virulent virus. They are fake news. Everyone knows that a viral rumor is difficult to correct, causing catastrophic damage and outlasting the truth for a long time. With the new draft law strictly regulating the spread of rumors and false information during elections, Morocco wants to show that the digital space is not a neutral forum, but a battleground where public opinion can be heavily manipulated.
This text, presented by Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit raises a central question: how can the integrity of an electoral process be protected when artificial intelligence can create voices, faces, and videos in seconds that seem more real than life? The danger is no longer theoretical. Numerous examples exist worldwide of voice deepfakes imitating candidates and other serious manipulations . Today, considering fake news as a mere «slip-up» would be irresponsible. The most sensitive part of the bill also concerns opinion polls.
The ban on online opinion polls, conducted or disseminated during election periods, addresses a very real challenge: the direct influence of these figures on voting. The case of Brazil in 2022, where polls massively shared on social media shaped public perceptions, demonstrates how this tool can become a formidable weapon. The delicate balance between freedom of expression and protecting the electoral process remains. This is why the goal is not to silence, but to clarify and, above all, to empower individuals, so that everyone can recognize a digital trap. It is about questioning before sharing, and it is about choosing information over incitement. The fight against fake news is not just an electoral challenge. This challenge is a daily one, everywhere.
