Global blueberry market: The increase in power is confirmed

The berry sector, particularly blueberries, has propelled Morocco to the forefront of the global market. The Kingdom has even become an African powerhouse, according to data from the International Blueberry Organization (IBO). Invited to the Morocco Berry Conference 2025, recently held in Agadir, Gustavo Yentzen Wilson, Executive Director of the IBO, gave a presentation on the evolving global market, technological innovations, and Africa’s growing role in the global blueberry supply.
Global blueberry production is experiencing explosive growth. In 2024, it reached 2.15 million tons, with 78% destined for the fresh market and 22% for processing. This upward trend in production is expected to continue in the coming years. Production is projected to reach 3.2 million tons by 2028, representing a 49% increase, according to forecasts from the International Blueberry Organization, as reported by the international fruit and vegetable buying and selling platform Fructidor . The Americas remain the world’s leading blueberry producer, followed by the countries of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and the Asia-Pacific region.
In recent years, Africa has consolidated its position in the international supply chain, particularly thanks to Morocco, South Africa, and Egypt. The rise of these African countries could reshape the global market by 2030.
Speakers at the Morocco Berry Conference stressed the need for Morocco and its neighbors to strengthen the coherence of their offering, invest in logistics, and develop a more assertive branding in order to remain competitive in the South American market.
The Moroccan blueberry industry is experiencing growing momentum, driven by strong international demand. « Blueberry production has increased by more than 400% in recent years. In 2024, 71,700 tons of fresh blueberries were produced «, reports the International Blueberry Organization. Nearly 95% of Moroccan blueberries are destined for export, primarily to Europe. The small blue berry is also proving popular in Asian markets, particularly China.
« The area dedicated to the cultivation of red fruits has reached nearly 14,000 hectares, half of which is devoted to blueberries. Blueberry exports are expected to register a double-digit increase this year. This dynamic is influenced by the growth in consumption at the international level «, explained Amine Bennani, president of the Moroccan Association of Red Fruit Producers (AMPFR), in a statement to L’Economiste.
