Green energy: Morocco shifts into high gear

Accelerated energy transition. The Board of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) has just approved and published the capacity of the national electricity system for the 2026-2030 period.

This capacity has been set at 10,429 MW, offering 1,091 MW and 3,193 MW of additional capacity compared to the 2025-2029 and 2024-2028 periods, respectively. This represents increases of approximately 12% and 44% compared to the levels recorded during the aforementioned periods, respectively.
This growth can be explained by the momentum of the national electricity sector, which is mainly driven by two factors: first, the increase in electricity demand forecasts, particularly due to the implementation of strategic industrial projects such as Gigafactories, seawater desalination, green hydrogen projects, and the electrification of certain industrial processes.
Added to this are the major projects related to hosting major international events scheduled to take place in Morocco. Then there are the investments in flexibility announced in the ONEE’s equipment plan, including essential infrastructure such as pumped storage power stations (PSPS), battery energy storage systems (BESS), and open-cycle gas turbines (OCGT). These strengthen the grid’s capacity to integrate more renewable energy.
This progress represents a major milestone for the Moroccan electricity market, consolidating national infrastructure and offering investors clear visibility on medium-term opportunities. It is the result of rigorous consultation between ANRE, ONEE, and all network operators.
This approach aims to optimize overall investments in production, ensuring medium- and long-term supply-demand balance, competitive costs, and enhanced service quality. The publication of capacity is an essential lever for transparency and predictability, as provided for in the legislative framework governing the sector. It aims to inform the decisions of public and private operators, as well as those of the competent authorities.
To this end, ANRE has developed a dedicated platform, accessible via its website (www.anre.ma), for all stakeholders in the electricity sector, particularly renewable energy project developers. With this decision, the Authority reaffirms its commitment to supporting the implementation of the national energy policy, promoting optimal investment planning while ensuring the preservation of the security, continuity, and performance of the Kingdom’s electricity network. This project has received financial support from two donors, namely the African Development Bank and the German International Cooperation agency (GIZ).
