Telecommunications: Morocco’s Digital Transition Gains Momentum

Morocco’s telecommunications sector continued its transformation during the first quarter of 2026, combining moderate financial growth with an accelerated technological shift.
According to the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT), which has just published its Analysis of the Evolution of the Telecommunications Sector in Morocco as of End-March 2026, the market continues to demonstrate resilience.
Overall telecommunications revenue increased by 2.89% compared with the first quarter of 2025, excluding the effects of inflation. This performance is supported by a mobile subscriber base that reached 57.06 million subscriptions, corresponding to a mobile penetration rate of 154.93%.
The total Internet subscriber base rose to 41.08 million subscriptions, bringing Internet penetration to 111.54%, up 3.05% year-on-year. This represents an additional 1.21 million Internet subscriptions compared with the end of March 2025. The fixed-line segment also continued to expand. The fixed subscriber base—including copper, FTTH, Wireless Local Loop (WLL), and excluding 4G/5G Home Boxes—stood at 3.262 million subscriptions, representing an annual increase of 5.05%.
Including 4G/5G Home Boxes, the total fixed subscriber base reached 4.60 million subscriptions.
Mobile Market Undergoing Structural Change. Outgoing mobile voice traffic totaled 8.45 billion minutes during the first quarter of 2026, representing a 18.79% decline compared with the same period in 2025.
Average monthly outgoing usage fell to 49 minutes per subscriber, with significant differences between customer segments:
21 minutes for prepaid users (compared with 27 minutes in Q1 2025);
213 minutes for postpaid subscribers (compared with 275 minutes one year earlier). The prepaid mobile subscriber base reached 48.73 million subscriptions, while the postpaid segment expanded to 8.33 million subscribers, an annual increase of 6.42%, equivalent to nearly 500,000 additional subscriptions. This gradual shift toward postpaid services reflects stronger customer loyalty and increasing digital financial inclusion. The number of SMS messages sent totaled 340 million, down 9.12% from the first quarter of 2025.
Average Revenue Per Minute (ARPM) in the mobile segment stood at MAD 0.22 per minute.
Meanwhile, mobile number portability exceeded 1.64 million transferred numbers at the end of March 2026, an increase of 9.42% year-on-year, illustrating continued strong competition among operators.

Mobile Internet and 5G Continue to Expand Rapidly

The mobile Internet subscriber base reached 38.10 million, up 2.91% compared with the previous year.
The number of 4G users stood at 33.07 million, while the number of 5G users reached 3.22 million.
Coverage is currently provided by nearly 8,400 5G base stations, reaching approximately 44% of Morocco’s population.
