Editorial – Moral awakening

For decades, the country has been exhausting itself chasing the same ghosts: those of public land that has suddenly “vanished,” rigged markets, and elected officials who confuse public office with personal gain. Every government promises change, every minister swears transparency, every strategy claims to be “next generation”. Yet on the ground, the feeling of powerlessness is growing, like that of corruption, which creates a toxic fog for businesses and in the lives of Moroccans.
The Minister of the Interior devoted a large part of his speech last week in Parliament to this issue, addressing those «who may have misappropriated land or stolen a dirham», promising to «settle accounts and take them to court».
At the same time, the new 2025-2030 strategy of the National Anti-Corruption Authority (INPPLC) also marks a break with the past.
Morocco has seen many crusades against this phenomenon.
During every election campaign, political speeches are filled to the brim with denunciations and promises. Corruption has become the favorite topic of campaign rallies.
While institutions were drafting report after report, the perception index continued to fall, further undermining the credibility of official discourse. This is not a subject to be taken lightly, as it raises issues of trust and country attractiveness. Neither investors nor Moroccans are lacking in memory in this regard.
The solution will undoubtedly come from a justice system that is visible, swift, and impartial. Likewise, exemplary behavior must cease to be a slogan and become a reflex. We must also make life difficult, every day, for this phenomenon that has taken root everywhere and is operating at full throttle. This will be the great moral awakening that the country needs. Otherwise, it will all be for nothing.
