Editorial – New Generation

For nearly two years, fruit and vegetable prices have been soaring, putting consumers under increasing pressure. Produce purchased at very low prices from farmers ultimately reaches markets at prices three or four times higher. Such a gap is difficult to justify, especially since the measures taken so far have remained insufficient. The government has been unable to solve this equation. In fact, it has merely blamed intermediaries who profit heavily along the way, without managing to curb the phenomenon.
Today, the Ministry of the Interior is preparing a draft law aimed at developing a new generation of wholesale markets in order to thoroughly modernize these strategic platforms. The plan includes digitalization to ensure greater price transparency and better governance. Led by the ministry’s departments, the reform seeks to equip all wholesale markets with modern information systems capable of tracing agricultural products and monitoring both the quantity and quality of goods at every stage.
Beyond the technical aspects, this reform is part of a broader effort to guarantee citizens a regular and secure supply of food products while supporting agricultural sectors. It could also help reduce price volatility and improve working conditions for professionals in the industry. If successful, it would mark a decisive turning point and reshape the rules of the game in distribution channels, in line with the demands of a constantly evolving market.
There is one condition, however: this reform must be carried out with strict oversight and rigorous control. Only then will it truly be possible to limit the room for maneuver enjoyed by intermediaries.
