Morocco-Senegal: Building complementarities in value chains

«I would like to emphasize here the importance of revitalizing the economic stimulus group established in 2015 «, said Aziz Akhannouch, Head of the Moroccan Government, the objective being to better structure and boost partnership relations between the two countries

After Rabat, which hosted the work of the 15th Moroccan -Senegalese Joint Commission where 17 cooperation agreements were signed (Cf.leconomiste.com), Casablanca hosted, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 , the Morocco-Senegal economic forum, under the joint chairmanship of Aziz Akhannouch, Head of the Moroccan government and Ousmane Sonko, Senegalese Prime Minister, accompanied by large ministerial delegations and businessmen.
The event, organized by the Moroccan employers’ association (CGEM), in the presence of the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development (AMDIE), the Senegalese Agency for Investment and Major Projects Promotion (APIX), and the Senegalese Investors Club, was therefore an opportunity to revitalize business between the two countries.
This business is already experiencing strong momentum, as the volume of trade between the two countries was estimated at US$ 286 million in 2024, and reached US$ 307 million in the first 11 months of 2025. However, according to the Senegalese Prime Minister, « These figures show that our economic relationship is progressing, but still below its strategic potential. Above all, they tell us that there is significant room for growth if we change the scale and nature of our partnership».
Morocco has already invested over US$ 530 million in Senegal, particularly in banking, insurance, construction materials, mining, agricultural inputs, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, as well as infrastructure and construction. « I would like however to emphasize the importance of revitalizing the economic stimulus group established in 2015 «, stated Aziz Akhannouch, the goal being to better structure and boost partnership relations between the two countries.
Chakib El Alj , president of the CGEM (General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises), shares this view. «While our cooperation is already showing encouraging results, its potential remains considerable «, he declared. Indeed, in recent years, trade between Morocco and Senegal has seen significant growth. Moroccan exports to Senegal exceeded 4 billion dirhams (US$ 441 million) in 2024, while Moroccan imports more than doubled to reach nearly 600 million dirhams (US$ 66 million).
Furthermore, Moroccan companies are satisfied with their presence in Senegal. They are firmly established there, particularly in the banking and insurance, cement, pharmaceutical, agribusiness, fertilizer, and real estate sectors, among others.
Furthermore, the strengthening of energy cooperation between the two countries, particularly through the Nigeria-Morocco Atlantic Gas Pipeline, is a major step forward. This transformative project , which will cross several African countries including Senegal, now an oil and gas producer, will open up unprecedented opportunities for development and regional and continental integration.
