Editorial – Momentum

«We are living through a pivotal moment and a decisive turning point in the history of modern Morocco» , announced His Majesty the King, following the Security Council’s adoption of the new resolution on the Sahara. In reality, this text endorses what Morocco has been advocating for years. This diplomatic success, based on the royal approach to managing this issue, has demonstrated that seriousness pays off. It is therefore a historic shift that confirms the Kingdom’s consistency and coherence in the face of a national cause defended with method, patience, and strategic depth.
This diplomatic victory opens a new, undoubtedly more demanding, phase, requiring continued mobilization, because, having convinced others of the merits of the Moroccan proposal, the challenge now is to make it a reality. Autonomy must become a tangible outcome. Hence the importance of the effort announced by His Majesty the King to update and elaborate on the autonomy plan. On a regional level, this new momentum risks further isolating Algeria. The country is being called upon to embrace the new possibility of reconciliation. Algiers risks a great deal if it remains entrenched in a rigid and increasingly costly stance. Its leaders must assimilate the new geopolitical realities, which are shifting in Morocco’s favor. The Kingdom has, moreover, paved the way for possible reconciliation by extending a hand, once again, to Algerian leaders to address all points of contention. The eastern neighbor must bear in mind that regional stability is fragile, and any escalation could jeopardize regional development. It is in the interest of the populations of both countries to focus more on complementarities, instead of clinging to unattainable ideals. Far from giving in to euphoria, Morocco wants to turn this historic turning point into a moment of clarity and realism. Because now is no longer the time for demonstrations, but for achievements.
